I would like to understand why Intel and Lenovo indicate lack of compatibility before I attempt to upgrade again.

When I tried to install Windows 10 (based on MSFT statement of compatibility), I had a bad blue-screen experience, which caused me to investigate the compatibility, ending in discovery of this conflicting information. So there is a discrepancy between MSFT info and both Intel's and Lenovo's statements. Similarly, Lenovo does not list my system (M91p) as compatible with Windows 10:
